Paul Newman, Hollywood legend, died of cancer at the age of 83. He had reportedly been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year.

The Oscar winning actor passed away on September 26, 2008 at his home in Westport, Connecticut.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in January 1925, Newman served in the Navy in World War II. His plan to be a pilot was crushed when it was revealed that he was colour blind.

After the war, Newman studied acting at Yale and the Actors’ Studio in New York.

His best known roles include 1967’s Cool Hand Luke and 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

He was nominated for 10 Oscars during his career, winning Best Actor for The Color of Money in 1986. He also received two Golden Globe Awards, an Emmy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Paul Newman announced his retirement in 2007, admitting he was too old to continue working in Hollywood.

Newman was also famed the world over for his charity work. He set up the Scott Newman Center for drug abuse prevention, following the death of his son from a drug overdose in 1978.

He was also the founder of the world’s premier food companies, Newman’s Own. All profits and royalties from which were donated to charity.
